Our program serves children from birth to age five, providing books during their preschool years. Once children enter kindergarten, their schools continue supporting literacy through the Early Literacy Foundation. This work is made possible by generous local donors who cover half the cost of each book for Hardeman County children, while also supporting additional early literacy and school programs.

Sustained Growth
The more children we reach, the greater the cost—but also the greater the impact. We invite local businesses to partner with us as sustained supporters. A monthly gift helps keep the program thriving in Hardeman County. If you’d like to cover one month’s cost, consider joining at one of these levels:
Silver Donor: $500
Gold Donor: $850
Platinum Donor: $1,200
Meet Dolly
With vital financial support from the Tennessee General Assembly, foundations, and corporate sponsors, GELF funds half the cost of Imagination Library books for enrolled children statewide, supporting grassroots organizers in each of Tennessee’s 95 counties as they raise the other half of the cost of books for enrolled children in their county. Since 2004, we have mailed over 50 million books to children statewide.
Dolly Parton’s vision inspires our program: every child deserves the joy and opportunity that comes from reading. Dolly’s Imagination Library has helped millions of children develop a love for books—and here in Hardeman County, we are proud to continue that legacy.
Why Early Literacy Matters
Studies show that the first five years of life are critical for brain development. Children who are read to regularly in these formative years enter school prepared, confident, and excited to learn. By giving a child books now, we’re shaping future readers, thinkers, and leaders.
Whether you’re a parent, teacher, grandparent, or community supporter, you can help spread the gift of reading:
Enroll your child or grandchild
Volunteer to support literacy events
Donate to ensure every child receives their monthly book
Together, we can open doors to imagination, learning, and opportunity—one book at a time.
